August (Peridot)
Peridot is a bright lime-to-olive green gem known as the “gem of the sun” symbolizing peace, strength, and good luck . Color is driven by the presence of iron in its crystal structure, and measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Peridot is formed under extreme heat deep in the earths upper mantle and carried up by volcanoes, peridot is also occasionally recovered from fallen pallasite meteorites. major modern deposits are located in the United States ( San Carlos, Apache reservation in Arizona) Pakistan, Myanmar ,China ,and Vietnam. Mined for over 3500 years starting on the Egyptian island of Zabargad; ancient peoples believed it warded off terror and evil spirits.
